Cybersecurity Professional with a passion for tinkering.
It all started with an old laptop that could barely run Windows. I wanted to get rid of it, but the hoarder in me thought “There has to be some other use for this device.” Granted, it ran Windows 10 poorly, but I hadn’t tried running anything else. So I said what the heck. Let’s blow away the Operating system on it and install Linux. After fumbling my way through the process of installing an OS on a USB drive, I finally booted up Linux. My distro of choice was Ubuntu 18.04 and I was impressed. ‘Bionic Beaver’ (the codename for that version of Linux) was the first taste I had of a user-friendly, smooth Desktop Environment that had the strong and capable bones of Linux. The laptop ran like it was brand new. No more slow, lagging and choppy usage, it was zippy and smooth all around. I had breathed new life into this laptop by installing Linux onto it. From there I was hooked. Any hardware I could get my hands on, I wanted. I wanted old gear that was cheap, and ready to be thrown out because I knew, that installing Linux on it would make it feel new. Thus my Homelab was born.
All this is to say, it does not matter whether you have a server rack or a few mini PCs, keep learning. A server is a server. If it makes you happy and provides you utility, it doesnt matter. The most important thing you can be is hungry. Hungry to learn more, hungry for more experience, and hungry to share these ideas and lessons with those around you.
Whenever I am trying to learn something new, I Google the bajeezus out of it. And the resources I find most helpful, are tutorials/blogs/project pages written by other tinkerers or DevOps engineers. This is my attempt at documenting all of my projects in hopes that one day someone will see it and find it as a solution to one of their problems.
My Homelab is constantly evolving and being worked on. Part of the fun, is finding new services to host and deploy while working on others. Whether the work is tearing down old services or redeploying to streamline the Homelab, It is all an amazing learning experience. Keep on learning and stay hungry.
