RAM, or Random Access Memory is dynamic memory that your computer uses to process data. Its purpose is to provide quick Read/Write access to a specified data storage. This is much quicker than running that same data directly off of a HDD or a (Hard Disk Drive). RAM is utilized through RAM-sticks that can usually be swapped out, depending on the hardware manufacturer.
So why does all this matter?
Well, it matters because just about every computer requires this dynamic memory, and it SIGNIFICANTLY increases performance when the proper amount of RAM is added.
For example, most Laptops will contain about two RAM slots, but usually only come with one RAM stick installed. Usually this leaves a little room for some upgradeability.
“But Grey, who cares about my RAM Sticks and why should I care??”
Well, if you have a computer at home that you would like to add a bit of juice to, take a look at the RAM. Chances are, you are not using ALL of your available RAM options.
Check the model of the computer and see what the Max RAM for that specific Model is. (A simple Google Search of the Computer Model and ‘RAM Upgrade’ should yield helpful results.)
It is important to note what type of RAM the Computer requires. There are a few different types of RAM, (ie. DDR3 and DDR4) and they are not interchangeable or mixable.
I have several boxes here at home that many people would consider ancient. But recently, I maxed out the RAM, (and I take care of my stuff) and they are literally running like new. I am confident i just added about 3 years to each box.
Thanks for reading, now go put new life into old computers and make cool things!
